Fox Preps Trio of War Classics for Blu-ray

Fox has issued Blu-ray release dates for a blitzkrieg of war-themed titles due this Father's Day, including the classics 'Patton,' 'The Sand Pebbles ( Quelli della San Pablo) and 'The Longest Day.'

Fox first revealed plans to release the three titles as part of a joint Father's Day promo last month, but stopped short of issuing an exact street date. The studio has now issued a retail announcement for 'The Longest Day,' 'The Sand Pebbles' and the Oscar-winning 'Patton,' all of which will debut on Blu-ray on June 3rd.

Sony Plans 100+ New Blu-ray Titles For 2008

With the high-def format war over, Sony says it plans to ramp up Blu-ray production and marketing.

According to an article in Video Business, the studio aims to release more than 100 titles in the upcoming year, its highest number yet. From the format’s debut in 2006, the studio has released 93 titles in all.
Although the studio stopped short of announcing any specific release dates, it did reveal several titles planned for Blu-ray later this year, including ‘The Other Boleyn Girl’ with Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson, and upcoming theatrical releases ‘Hancock’ with Will Smith, and ‘Don’t Mess With the Zohan’ with Adam Sandler.

I'm told that many more catalog titles are in the works for possible release by the end of 2008, including such films as Walk the Line, the classic Batman: The Movie, The French Connection, Super Troopers, Fargo, the X-Men trilogy, the original Planet of the Apes, possibly Young Frankenstein and maybe even MGM musical titles, not to mention the expected new release films. Last week we updated you on some of Fox and MGM's upcoming Blu-ray release plans for later in 2008. Now, Buena Vista Home Entertainment has just sent over its updated Blu-ray Disc release schedule for the next few months. As you know, Hidalgo, M. Night Shyamalan's Unbreakable and the Coyote Ugly: Double Shot Edition street on 4/1. The theatrical version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is tentatively due on 5/13 (the street date may change slightly). The National Treasure: Collector's Edition and National Treasure: Book of Secrets both follow on 5/20. June will see the Blu-ray release of The Recruit and M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, both on 6/3. Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York is now confirmed for Blu-ray release on 7/1. And Sleeping Beauty is currently set for 10/7. Additionally, the straight-to-video sequel Tinkerbell is due in October as well. Obviously, a number of new theatrical films will also be released on Blu-ray Disc in 2008. But here's a few new titles for you: Studio sources have confirmed that a Nixon: Election Year Edition and Good Will Hunting are both on the way for later in 2008. We've also learned that Kill Bill 1 & 2 and Finding Nemo are now being planned for release in 2009 on the format. You probably have questions about these titles, particularly Kill Bill, but no more information is available at this time. Obviously, it's way too early to talk about specific street dates, version and special features. Just know that they ARE on the way. And again, even though this information comes directly from studio sources, you should still consider it Rumor Mill-worthy until the titles are officially announced.

Universal Studios è stato per mesi uno dei sostenitori principali del formato HD-DVD, questo fino all'abbandono di Toshiba la multinazionale che ha creato la tecnologia, sconfitta definitivamente dal Blu-ray nel mese di febbraio. Si veda al riguardo questo articolo di Macity.

Da una notizia di oggi pubblicata da Reuters si apprende che anche la major di Hollywood annuncerà a breve il passaggio al formato Blu-ray, incluso il piano dei primi titoli che vedranno la luce sia su dischi DVD sia sul nuovo formato per l'alta definizione.

Tra i titoli più attesi sul mercato americano troviamo i prossimi possibili successi di botteghino: The Incredible Hulk con Edward Norton, William Hurt e Liv Tyler, il thriller Wanted con Angelina Jolie e James McAvoy, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, l'adattamento per il grande schermo del musical Mamma Mia con Maryl Streep, infine il sequel The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

L'ingresso ufficiale di Universal Studios nel mercato USA dei Blu-ray è programmato per il 22 luglio con due film della serie La Mummia e il Re Scorpione. Numerosi altri titoli in BD sono previsti entro la fine dell'anno tra cui American Gangster, Miami Vice e U-571.

(NYSE: VIA), today announced its first day-and-date Blu-ray release, The Spiderwick Chronicles on June 24 and rolling out in key international markets beginning in July. Continuing its commitment to offer the best possible movie experiences for consumers, the studio will deliver the highest quality picture, sound and special features available with these upcoming Blu-ray releases. In the U.S., There Will Be Blood, Cloverfield, Bee Movie, Face/Off and Next will begin arriving May 20 to capitalize on Memorial Day and Father's Day. Internationally, The Spiderwick Chronicles will be followed by Cloverfield and the Academy award-winner for Best Picture, No Country for Old Men beginning in August.

The Spiderwick Chronicles launches PHE's day-and-date new release strategy. Based on the best-selling series of books, The Spiderwick Chronicles takes viewers on a fantastical journey into the unseen world all around us and the Blu-ray disc will include behind-the-scenes featurettes, an exploration of the Spiderwick world, an exclusive peek inside Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide and much more.

PHE's 2008 Blu-ray titles debut on May 20 in the U.S. with two sensational action-adventures: a Special Collector's Edition of Face/Off , the mind-blowing crime-drama starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, with special features such as multiple commentaries, deleted scenes, an alternate ending, the Making Of Face/Off and more; and the sci-fi thriller Next , which stars Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel in an adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story. The Next Blu-ray includes a Making Of featurette, "Visualizing the Next Move," "The Next Grand Idea" and "Two Minutes in the Future with Jessica Biel."

DreamWorks Animation's smash hit Bee Movie also will buzz onto Blu-ray on May 20. The hilarious animated adventure from renowned comedian Jerry Seinfeld took audiences by swarm and earned approximately $287 million in worldwide box office. The Bee Movie Blu-ray features a wealth of bonus materials including "Barry's Trivia Track" with fun pop-up trivia, changeable menus, a Build-A-Bee feature to allow viewers to create their own avatar, lost scenes, alternate endings and much, much more.

Following the initial wave of titles, Producer J.J. Abrams' monster hit, Cloverfield, arrives on Blu-ray on June 3. Earning over $166 million in worldwide box office to date, Cloverfield thrilled critics and audiences alike with its shocking, first-person video account of a horrifying attack on Manhattan by an unknown -- and seemingly unstoppable -- force. The Cloverfield Blu-ray will include an exclusive feature-length "Special Investigation Mode" with added details about the film. Additional features include a director commentary, Making Of featurettes, deleted scenes, alternate endings with commentary and more.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson's critically-acclaimed epic There Will Be Blood also arrives on Blu-ray June 3. The film was named by more than 200 critics as one of the top 10 movies of 2007 and stars Academy Award®, Golden Globe® and SAG Award® winner Daniel Day-Lewis. Paramount Blu-ray in May/June

Paramount Home Entertainment have announced their return to Blu-ray Disc with several new and old titles coming to the US on 20th May 2008. New titles include Bee Movie and two titles that were cancelled when Paramount went HD DVD only late last summer, Blades of Glory and Face/Off Special Edition. Titles being re-released as Paramount gets back into Blu-ray production are Aeon Flux, Babel, Black Snake Moan, Coming to America, Disturbia, Dreamgirls, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Sleepy Hollow, The Untouchables, The Warriors, Trading Places, We Were Soldiers and World Trade Centre. For those that don’t remember, all of these were previously released on Blu-ray but production was ceased following their HD DVD exclusivity deal.

Moving into June Paramount will release a few big titles including their first day-and-date release since retuning to the format. On 3rd June 2008 you can expect Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood, followed a few weeks later by the day-and-date The Spiderwick Chronicles.
