About a year ago it was announced that CBS is trying to find a way to how Star Trek could make for a Blu-ray release fit: The Next Generation (TNG Star Trek). Well, Bill Hunt of thedigitalbits.com at ComicCon discovered more so.

Accordingly, CBS is currently hard at a remastered version of The Next Generation work is to begin publication in 2012. Currently, a sampler for four test episodes are created. The Sampler Disc will be made available to the end of 2011 on the one way or another, the fans.

The Blu-ray implementation of The Next Generation is made particularly difficult because the special effects were created, in contrast to the scenes shot on film, only in the TV format with significantly lower resolution. Therefore, the special effects created for a new HD conversion and cut again into the original footage.

With 178 episodes in seven seasons it may take a while until the entire series has been revised and we can admire all the adventures of Captain Picard and his crew on Blu-ray Disc. The publication of the first seasons in 2012 but fell appropriately enough in the year in which the cult series, the 25th Television Starts celebrating their anniversary

Non ricordo dove lessi che era "impossibile" da trasferire in HD.
Ed infatti dovranno ricreare da zero, tutti gli effetti speciali.

Ho trovato un interessantissimo articolo in rete, che parla di Deep Space Nine e che coinvolge anche The Next Generation.

In the planning stages of The Next Generation, an important decision was made that still affects Deep Space Nine today. The choice Gene Roddenberry and the production team faced was whether to do the visual effects for the new series using film techniques or on video. Video effects were faster and less costly, but only worked on the television screen. Because of video's low resolution at the time, there would be no final negative print from which film versions of The Next Generation could be edited together for theatrical release in other countries.

Ultimately, the decision was made to go to video, and Deep Space Nine continues that process today. Thus, although the resolution of the visual effects is much higher today than was possible in 1987, there are no final film prints of any episode of either series, and the episodes cannot be rescanned at the higher resolution necessary for high-definition television broadcast in the future.

So every episode of TNG and DS9 would have to be reconstructed from original film elements and every single special effect would have to be recreated and re-edited.


In pratica, non esistono copie su pellicola (che quindi possano essere scansionate per creare un Master HD) ne' di TNG ne' di DS9 (e forse nemmeno di VOYAGER). Tutti gli effetti speciali sono stati creati "su nastro" e quindi girati in bassissima definizione (cosa che riduceva drasticamente i costi, visto che non si era certi che lo show, avesse successo). Questo fa sģ, che debba essere "rifatta daccapo" tutta la fase di post produzione (178 episodi!). Ecco perche' non si sono azzardati sinora. E' un lavoro ciclopico !

Chissą che sia il prodromo di un'uscita anche per gli altri episodi e soprattutto che non li pubblichino a spizzichi e bocconi, senza rispettare l'ordine di produzione o cronologico originale.
Ma immagino che si tratti di un'uscita test.

Il Disco USA recensito e' REGION FREE e con tutti i maggiori idiomi europei, quindi sicuramente uguale a quello che verrą distribuito in Europa.
